The usual examples of synthetic a priori statements are – it seems at least since Kant:
"Nothing can be simultaneously red and green all over"
7 + 5 = 12 (or any other basic arithmetic statements).
Are there more complex examples than those two?…

What is Quine's rebuttal to Grice and Strawson's In Defense of Dogma?
In response to Quine's rejection of the analytic-synthetic distinction, Strawson and Grice appear to reduce Quine's rejection (or skepticism) of synonymy to a rejection of meaning. What is/would be Quine's response?

Does Quine's dissolution of the Analytic/Synthetic distinction challenge mathematical realism?
I was surprised to learn that Quine is a mathematical realist (See this interview for example). I always assumed that his "Two Dogmas of Empiricism" and specifically his dissolution of the Analytic/Synthetic distinction was a strong challenge to…

Why can we not reduce necessity to analyticity?
Why can’t we eliminate talk of necessity and possible worlds, for talk of analyticity and (non-modal) logical consistency? Has there been any attempt in recent times to do this? I'm not 100% sure, but I think this is what logical positivists…

(2) Every apple is a fruit.
This one is a bit more confusing. At first glance, I…

Quine on Necessity
Lately, I have been reading some of Quine's works on modality. I can't help but feel that many of his pronouncements on modality are wrong/misguided, although pinpointing exactly where is goes wrong is proving rather difficult. For instance, in The…

Can a priori reconsideration improve on a priori theory? "Analytical" etc. schools
So something strange I've realized lately, in the humanities and social sciences it's fairly common to see labels such as "analytical", "analytic school" etc. which I read to suggest as if these schools are "improved versions" of those that they…

The logic of analytic inferences
Consider the following argument:
P1: A is a father.
Therefore: A is a parent.
The above inference is analytic and valid: it is impossible that someone is a father without also being a parent. However, formalizing the above and similar inference as…

Wouldn’t analysis still be useful with a naturalized notion of contradiction?
I wonder why analysis receives so much attention when it’s very narrow with how we experience the world. That is its focus on logical and mathematical proofs.
One reason for this focus must be its success at studying scientific and mathematical…
