The most important software categories concerning music are:
- DAW (digital audio workstation), typically a multi-track recorder with vast editing capabilities, where each track may be modified separately, muted, transposed, filtered, etc.
- Music typesetting program. This may also produce a MIDI representation, separate voices as well as full score, also applicable to generate sheet music for a transposing instrument
- Utility apps like metronome or tuner (available for all types of mobile phones)
- VSTs (Virtual Studio Technology) supply either instruments or filter to another program. The former have drastically cut in the market of hardware synthesizers.
