Questions tagged [software]

For questions about musical computer programs used by musicians for practice, performance, or composition. More popular software will have a specific tag for it. Do not use for software recommendation questions as they are off topic.

The most important software categories concerning music are:

  1. DAW (digital audio workstation), typically a multi-track recorder with vast editing capabilities, where each track may be modified separately, muted, transposed, filtered, etc.
  2. Music typesetting program. This may also produce a MIDI representation, separate voices as well as full score, also applicable to generate sheet music for a transposing instrument
  3. Utility apps like metronome or tuner (available for all types of mobile phones)
  4. VSTs (Virtual Studio Technology) supply either instruments or filter to another program. The former have drastically cut in the market of hardware synthesizers.
