Richard Dawkins is an English ethologist, evolutionary biologist and author. He is an emeritus fellow of New College, Oxford, and was the University of Oxford's Professor for Public Understanding of Science from 1995 until 2008.

Dawkins came to prominence with his 1976 book, "The Selfish Gene", which popularised the gene-centred view of evolution and introduced the term meme. An outspoken atheist, Dawkins is a vice president of the British Humanist Association, and a supporter of the Brights movement. He is well known for his criticism of creationism and intelligent design.

The author of several books on Evolution and Atheism, Professor Dawkins was the Professor for Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University from 1995 til 2008 when he retired.

Prof. Dawkins is an active critic of organized religion, beliefs based on faith, and similarly "non-scientific" viewpoints relating to the origin and nature of life on Earth. He is a vociferous advocate of the the theory of Evolution by Natural Selection.

Among his academic awards are the Zoological Society of London Silver Medal(1989), Faraday Award(1990) and the Kistler Prize (2001)
