Do I need a nailing edge around the perimeter of my room for my new AdvanTech subfloor?

I have torn out the original flooring from by 1910 Victorian so that I can level the joists and install new sound subfloor. I'm using 3/4" AdvanTech T&G subfloor, glued and screwed to the new sisters. What I'd like to know is if I need to install…

What's the purpose of this lumber resting on top plate of the wall?

Today I was doing some due diligence to open up an interior wall on the first floor or 2 story house built in 1968. The wall runs parallel to the joists so presumably is a non load bearing. When I cut a small part of the ceiling near the wall, I…

Why is blocking never placed "sideways"?

If you are blocking for structural strength (not fire protection or nailing surface), wouldn't it be better to put the 2x4s sideways, oriented the way they would be in a built-up header?

How do I repair and block up a completely cut top plate?

I removed some in-wall ducting coming from the attic that fed registers on both sides of the wall. I intend on patching up the drywall of course, but before I do I want to block up the hole in the top plate as seen in the photos, and make sure that…

Do I need blocking between 2x8 joists with an 8-foot span in a kid's fort?

About to embark on a DIY project to build my kids a fort. It will be a deck using 4x4's for legs, holding up a box of 2x8's. Three interior joists for a total of 7 2x8's will make up the frame for the floor. The 2x8's will be attached to each other…

How should I nail blocking?

I am struggling to efficiently add blocking to 16" stud bays when I can't end nail through the other side of the stud. I have a full-size nailer, a palm nailer, and a hammer or two--but not a lot of experience with any of these. What are your…

Can I safely remove this unused blocking from a load-bearing wall?

In opening up an exterior (load-bearing wall) to re-insulate it and replace wood paneling with drywall, I found a weird piece of blocking towards the top. It doesn't look like it's supporting anything, and there's nothing nailed to either side of…

How do I properly lay a tongue and groove plywood subfloor in a remodel?

When laying T&G plywood subfloors, do all of the edges need to be supported around the perimeter of the room? If so, I may need to add some sort of blocking in my project and I'm not sure of the best approach since the walls are sitting over the…

Can I remove and replace blocking that's pushing up on subfloor, causing hump?

Over the summer (in humid Louisiana), we witnessed a hump emerge (about 0.5" from high point to the low point a few feet away) in our kitchen in our relatively new house. Very annoying. I went under the house, and I noticed that the part of the sill…

Acceptable tension on copper piping?

Earlier this week I had a plumber rough in valve/piping for a shower renovation. Since then, I have decided to go back and redo the walls (long, long story) and, as a result, the final finished wall will be 1/4" thinner. I know for a fact that this…

I have a finished basement wall that has an exposed header since removing a drop ceiling. My goal is to replace the ceiling with a flush ceiling, perhaps drywall or a joist-mount grid system. The way that it was blocked to the joists would not allow…
