Questions tagged [scandinavian-defense]

Scandinavian Defense is the chess opening characterized by the moves 1.e4 d5.

The Scandinavian Defence is an unbalancing, aggressive opening where Black immediately attacks White's e4-pawn. There is not much theory in this opening, and so Black can cut down on opening theory by playing this opening.

Black may recapture the pawn with his queen with 2...Qxd5, after 2.exd5, where his queen will have to move again.

Black may also attack the pawn with his knight with 2... Nf6, where White can gain space and Black will play in the fashion of the Alekhine defense, or White can hold onto the pawn with 3.c4, where Black usually offers a gambit of his c- or e-pawn.

How to attack in Scandinavian Defense

After 10 moves as Black, I often end up in a position very close to this, where I still have left my options open about castling. [FEN "r3k2r/ppqn1ppp/2pbpn2/5bB1/2B5/P1NP1N1P/1PP2PP1/R2Q1RK1 w kq - 3 11"] Although I play this opening fairly often,…

Is the Scandinavian Defence inferior?

As Black, I have never played the Scandinavian Defence, nor have I ever liked the Center Game for White. It seems like 1. e4 d5 wastes valuable time after 2. exd5 Qxd5 3. Nc3 and Black's Queen must flee, while White can comfortably develop: The…

Why is the Advance Variation considered strong vs the Caro-Kann but not vs the Scandinavian?

As title above, why is the Advance Variation in these recent years considered strong vs the Caro-Kann, especially owing to White's early space advantage in the center, but not vs the Scandinavian? In other words, the Advance Variation (especially…
