Middlegame

The middlegame is the stage of the game after the opening has been completed and most of the pieces have been developed, but before the endgame.

Common Plans

In the middlegame, the plans usually revolve around trying to improve one's own position and win material from the opponent, or sometimes, to deliver mate to the opponent. Tactics are most commonly used to win material, and indeed, this part of the game is often rife with tactics.

Classification

Many times, the middlegame is classified by the type of opening that starts the game. For example, a Sicilian middlegame is often dominated by opposite side castling and mutual attacks on the castled kings. A Ruy Lopez middlegame is often one where white tries to take advantage of a space edge and black tries to make use of the two bishops.
