I'm using Windows 11 Pro. I'm trying to encrypt an external HDD through BitLocker (Seagate One Touch w/PW SCSI), size: 2TB.

My PC Specs: My PC Specs

Error Message

BitLocker can't enable encryption on this hardware encrypting drive volume because the drive bands couldn't be enumerated.

Here's a screenshot of the error:

  • Ext4 + LUKS on Linux systems work just fine on the drive but, can't use them due to cross-platform compatibility.
  • I have tried formatting the drive.

I have tried the following methods...

Step-2: enter image description here

Step-3: enter image description here

2nd Method, Step-1: enter image description here

Step-2: enter image description here

Was there a question during the process whether to use software or hardware encryption? The message is related to BitLocker trying (and failing) to use TCG OPAL hardware encryption, but Windows shouldn't be using that anymore in current versions. – u1686_grawity May 15 '23 at 08:26
  • Please provide screenshots of the earlier steps. – Ramhound May 15 '23 at 12:39
  • I have provided screenshots of the steps I followed. No, there wasn't any question prompt to choose from! – Starboy May 16 '23 at 05:15
  • Does anyone know what this error means? I couldn't find anything about it... – Starboy May 18 '23 at 04:27
  • Googling this error message shows no results, which indicates that this must be a very rare error. Possibly, the drive controller of your usb enclosure is not compatible with Bitlocker. All I can suggest is to connect the drive to a different machine and repeat the process. – Bernd Schwanenmeister May 23 '23 at 09:50
