I have a Micro SD card which was created with an embedded Linux, it is used to boot up a device. I need to take this card, plug to a flash reader and plug the reader to my Windows laptop. The ultimate goal is to make a copy of the card and save the copy at my laptop because I need to burn the card with an updated image.

My laptop has Hyper-V VM installed running Ubutun 20.04.

I already asked question how to make Micro SD copy using dd command in Linux.

I also found this article how to mount a Windows' USB drive to Linux VM.

I just plugged the flash reader to my laptop, at the File Explorer, I see the USB drive E. When I double click E, Windows has a pop-up saying it needs to format the device.

I do not want to risk damaging the card and did nothing.

Can you confirm if my plan is good:

  1. Plug the reader with the Micro SD card to laptop
  2. It is expected that Windows cannot read the card since it is Linux format
  3. Go ahead to follow this article to mount the card to Hyper-V VM
  4. Run dd command to make copy
  5. Need to unmount it afterwards

Thanks.
