The USB device isn't showing up normally, but Ubuntu shows it when I go to disks.

It shows "No Media", and I can't do anything to the device.

This isn't the first time similar things are happening and I suspect the USB isn't truly dead but something is messed up and I cannot recreate the volume. Suggestions welcome.

I have tried:

sudo smartctl --all /dev/sda

The output is:

/dev/sda: Unknown USB bridge [0xffff:0x1201 (0x000)]
Please specify device type with the -d option.

Use smartctl -h to get a usage summary

  • Maybe it failed even while rufus was using it. You say it's not the first time. Well, i've had loads of computer issues but never had rufus hang. You could troubleshoot to see to what extent it's particularly with that USB stick or particularly with that computer.. And if it's particularly with that computer, then if it's particularly with that port. Or could be the power supply of that computer causing usb issues – barlop Sep 09 '22 at 18:45
