Seven card stud is a stud-poker variant where each player starts with 2 face down cards and an up card, followed by 3 more up cards, and a final face down card.

Seven card stud is typically played with fixed-limit betting, and up to 7 players at a table, although up to 9 may be possible with many players folding, or dealing the final card as a community card. Each player contributes an ante, and the low card must make an initial bet known as the bring-in, which is a fraction of the small bet. After the first round, the best up cards determine the order of betting. The second and third rounds of betting are all at the lower limit, and the later rounds are at the higher limit.

The winner is the player with the best 5 card hand. In case of a tie, the pots is split.

Seven card stud is the "S" in HORSE.

Variations include "Roll your own", common in home games, where every card is dealt face down, and the player decides which card to turn face up before betting. Razz is an ace to five lowball variation, and is the "R" in HORSE. Eight or better is a hi-low variation, where the winning low hand cannot have a card higher than an eight; it is the "E" in HORSE.
