Tubas have 3 or 4 valves that are used in combination to form different notes together with varying tension in the lips. The most common tunings are Bb and Eb. Bb tubas have generally lower range than Eb tuba, but with the addition of a 4th valve, Eb tuba can reach the lower range similar to the Bb tuba.
