Mallet percussion is a group of instruments in the percussion family.
These instruments consist of a series of tuned bars (usually wood or metal) in a keyboard-like arrangement.
The bars are struck with mallets, the tips of which can be made from wide range materials that produce different effects.
One or more mallets can be held in each hand of the player. For the particular four-mallet technique use the tag: four-mallets.
Particular mallet percussion instruments include:
- Crotales (antique cymbals); crotales
- Glockenspiel (orchestral bells)
- Xylophone; xylophone
- Vibraphone; vibraphone
- Marimba
- Tubular Bells (orchestral chimes)
Although the timpani (kettle drums) are played with mallets, theses aren't consider to be part of the mallet percussion group. Question about the timpani should instead be tagged: timpani.
