I'm considering chemically stripping then applying a poly to my hardwood floor. The current finish is varnish I believe, it's circa 1937. My concern is that I have a dog urine stain (see picture).

One estimate I received said chemical stripping would not remove the stain, but that it had to be cut out and replaced with some wood from one of my closet floors.

  • Is replacing the wood my only option?
  • Is it true that chemical stripping would not remove a urine stain?

  • While the flooring contractor you contacted probably has a fair bit of experience, my inexperienced guess is that you won't know for sure until you try. Try stripping it. If that doesn't work, try sanding it. If that doesn't work, then he was right and you'll have to patch/replace. – FreeMan Mar 06 '23 at 18:47
