Semi-Slav name origin

The name Semi-Slav suggests that somehow it's half of a Slav. How did this name come about? Or what does it mean? The two openings seem completely different to me due to the fate of the c8 bishop.

White's c5 in Semi-Slav (or Slav) Defense

Lately, I've been experimenting as white with pushing the c pawn in the Semi-Slav Defence, but mostly in blitz games, so I would be very thankful if some of you could analyze a bit and point out if there are any major drawbacks compared to other…

How to break through a stubborn Semi-Slav?

With every other middlegame formation, I know more or less what I would do if I were given a load of free tempi, and thus, what I should aim for in the present. However, concerning a highly defensive Semi-Slav still with "fangs," it seems like…

What is the rationale behind Black playing e6 in so many openings?

I am new to this stack exchange, so apologies if this question doesn't fit here. Though I have advanced through the game, and now have a somewhat respectable rapid rating of 1550, I have always found some chess openings to be a source of confusion.…

Easy variation to learn with White against Semislav with not many lines and avoiding the Slav at the same time if possible

I'm looking for an easy variation to learn against the Semislav. Note that I play d4, c4, Nc3 against many openings. I tried to play the 5.Bg5 line but I felt that it was full of memorization: [FEN ""] 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3 e6 5.Bg5 So I…

How to play against the Noteboom variation?

In online games I sometimes have this happen: [fen ""] 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 e6 4.Nc3 dxc4 and Black plays the famous "Noteboom variation". I checked my database and I have in fact lost every single game as White where this variation happened.…

Move orders in the 6.Qc2 Anti-Meran Semi-Slav

After 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6 5.e3 Nbd7 6.Qc2 Bd6 White can play the so-called Shabalov-Shirov Gambit‎ with 7.g4!? on the grounds that 7...Nxg4 allows 8.Rg1 and the important g7 Pawn is going to fall. Of course this is not a forced win by…

Feedback and advice on a slav position for White

I play d4 with White and against the slav/semislav I start with the order of d4,c4,e3,Nc3 usually. But when I face the 3...Bf5 variation in the slav I do 4.Nf3. My problem is with a certain variation where I can't play Nh5 trying to capture the the…

In the 5.e3 Semi-Slav, why is the move ...Be7 bad?

I don't know anything about the Semi-Slav. The 5.e3 Semi-Slav with ...Be7 looks like the QGD with ...Be7, except that Black has lost a tempo playing the move ...c6 (Black will play ...c5 in two moves rather than one) and White has blocked his…
