Anatoly Karpov (born 1951) was the World Champion from 1975 to 1985 (and FIDE World Champion from 1993 to 1999 when Garry Kasparov broke from FIDE). He's known for his solid positional play. Like Botvinnik or Capablanca, in his prime Karpov was almost impossible to defeat.

Anatoly Karpov was the World Champion from 1975 to 1985 (and FIDE World Champion from 1993 to 1999 when Garry Kasparov broke from FIDE). Karpov obtained the title by default when, as the rightful challenger to Fischer, the latter refused to defend the crown.

Example of a Karpov vs. Kasparov game with a controversial move

Full disclosure: I'm not a regular chess player. This question is because I'm writing a book about alternate timelines, and I want to use a game in a real life famous chess match as a point of divergence. I'd like an occasion in which a sizeable…

Why is FIDE investigating Karjakin and Shipov, but not Karpov?

Recently FIDE decided to refer GMs Karjakin and Shipov to the ethics and disciplinary commission for supporting the Russian invasion of Ukraine. They have not, however, decided to refer GM Anatoly Karpov, even though Karpov is a member of the…

In which tournament did Karpov play his first move with white pieces and offer a draw?

It had to have happened in the 90s, but I can't remember either the tournament or Karpov's opponent (probably some Spanish tournament, like Linares or Dos Hermanas). Karpov was upset with the organization for some reason, and he complained by…

Did Kasparov and Karpov reconcile?

Did Kasparov and Karpov reconcile? In “On My Great Predecessors” Vol. V, Kasparov refers to Karpov very familiarly, as "Anatoly" or even "Tolya." He refers to Korchnoi (a much older player) formally, as Viktor Lvovich. I don't speak Russian, and I…

In Caro-Kann, which one is less risky, the main line or the Steinitz?

After 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 dxe4 4. Nxe4, the most popular move (main line) is 4...Bf5. But former world champion Anatoly Karpov seems to like 4...Nd7. Since Karpov's style is "solidly positional, taking no risks but reacting mercilessly to…

During the 1984-1985 Karpov-Kasparov match, what was Karpov's initial weight?

When discussing whether chess is a sport, I have often used that Karpov lost a reported 22 pounds (10 kg.) during the match as a point to show that chess can be physical. While 22 pounds is significant, I think it is even more significant because…

Karpov's Queen's Gambit beats Kasparov. What is Karpov thinking?

A lifelong 1.e4 player switching to 1.d4, naïvely, I see little White can do to stop Black from achieving what seems to be an excellent position. For example, from Karpov v. Kasparov, World Championship, 1984: [fen ""] [title "Tarrasch Defense,…
