For old and new PC/Laptops either Ubuntu Desktop or Ubuntu Server 20.04 are going to be installed. About the HD, they are based on either HDD and SSD for 500GB/1TB.

Note just to share information, with Virtual Box was created some Virtual Machines (.vdi) with a range of size between 20GB and 50GB for experimental purposes. And when was installed Ubuntu was used all the disk space - therefore was applied the default settings and non-manual partitions was involved. So far all work in peace. Of course take in consideration that exists a huge difference between 20/50GB and 500GB/1TB

Part I: for security and administration reasons some tutorials suggest use partitions, mostly / and /home, /var.

Now, is recommended to do not create the swap partition and use swap file instead, because it is the default approach since Ubuntu 17.04, it according with:

Part II: now, in other tutorials is suggested to use the default settings in peace, therefore I am assuming this approach takes all the hard-disk space as was applied through Virtual Box.

  • Is wise/recommended create manual partitions for Ubuntu or give all the HD space to Ubuntu based on the default settings?

  • Ubuntu default settings do a good job, use whole disk as /(root). Some people like to separate / and /home into two partitions. You do have to know how big to give each one, one mistake is to make / too small or to switch / with /home size(small home, very big /). A separate /home tends to keep/save data if you need to re-install /(OS) for some reason. – crip659 Apr 04 '22 at 18:47
