readily understand the relationship which exists between
osmotic pressure, rise in boiling-point, and depression of freezing-point. By virtue of the preponderating attraction which exists between heterogeneous elements of a solution the dissolved substance attracts the solvent with a force which is equal to a certain osmotic pressure ; it is, there- fore, not astonishing to find that the dissolved substance utilises this force to prevent the solvent from separating from it by volatilisation, by freezing, or by any other process. The active cause being the same — the effects are corre- lative.
