I live in a US home built in 1950. I recently found out our attic gable exhaust fan has died. OK, no worries, I’ll just swap the fan and we’re done here.

However I was surprised to find the fan doesn’t exhaust straight outside. The siding backer/outer wall is directly behind the fan. I noticed that there’s a gap towards the top and I can feel some fresh air coming in.

So I check the vent from the outside. It seems like the vent is higher than the fan, and the fan is thus blowing up and out.

Is this unusual? Is doing it that way interfering with the performance of my attic exhaust? I am getting my house resided in a few weeks, so I can talk to them about redoing the vent so it simply exhausts straight outside.

  • as long the fan can vent somewhere it is fine, however any obstructions will reduce its air flow – Ruskes Aug 27 '22 at 19:49
