Questions tagged [studies]

Studies are composed chess puzzles that ask the solver to find a winning or drawing line of play.

Studies are composed chess puzzles that ask the solver to find a winning or drawing line of play. They are closely related to chess problems, but there are two major differences:

  • Studies usually just ask for best play ("White to play and win" or "White to play and draw") and to obtain a theoretically won/drawn position, whereas problems typically seek mate in a specified number of moves (e.g. "White to mate in 4").

  • While both studies and problems are composed positions, those of studies tend to more closely resemble positions from actual play, while problems can be much more contrived.

Studies that have been cooked by computers

A study is unlike a regular chess problem. Instead of "mate in 3" (for instance), a study's instructions are something like "White to draw" (for instance). What this means is to find a line of play after which White reaches a position that is known…

Solvable studies that computers fail to crack

Are there chess studies that require an outside of the box thinking that goes beyond the concrete calculation capabilities of today's engines (e.g. Stockfish)? I have sometimes seen certain endgames that are known to be fortresses (drawn) but since…
