Studies are composed chess puzzles that ask the solver to find a winning or drawing line of play. They are closely related to chess problems, but there are two major differences:
Studies usually just ask for best play ("White to play and win" or "White to play and draw") and to obtain a theoretically won/drawn position, whereas problems typically seek mate in a specified number of moves (e.g. "White to mate in 4").
While both studies and problems are composed positions, those of studies tend to more closely resemble positions from actual play, while problems can be much more contrived.
