Why do some openings have Indian in their name?
Why are a few chess openings named King's Indian Defense, Queen's Indian Defense, Nimzo-Indian defense, and so on?
What is the significance of Indian in all these opening names? What's India's contribution to it?

What are the main ideas and goals in the Queen's Indian Defense?
There's no real surprise when it comes to the strategy for the King's Indian Defence: storm white's king side, maybe sac a few things, and mate (ideally).
But what does a practitioner of the QID hope to achieve in terms of the opening and long term…

Queen's Indian Defense question that has me stumped
After the moves 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 if White plays 3.Nf3, Black often plays the Queen's Indian Defense with 3...b6. But if White plays 3.Nc3, then Black rarely plays 3...b6.
[FEN ""]
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 (3.Nf3 b6) b6!?
Does anyone know why…

In Queen's Indian - Classical Line, why is ... Bb4+, Bd2 Be7 preferred over Be7 directly
Consider the following line
[FEN ""]
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 b6 4.g3 Ba6 5.b3 Bb4+ (5... Be7) 6.Bd2 Be7 (6... Bxd2+)
Black hardly ever plays 5... Be7 directly (I could only find one such game), but rather plays the above sequence (this sequence…

Is 1. Nf3 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. g3 b6 a QID even though White hasn't played d4 yet? What would you recommend me against it?
I first thought that starting with 1. Nf3 would avoid the QID. But after thinking about it, this is only true if White plays 1. Nf3 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3
The move 3. Nc3 seems really cool since this would probably get out of book most people who play…

Why does anybody allow the Queen's Indian Defense?
People often play:
d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 b6 4. g3
And allow both the Queen's Indian Defense:
4... Ba6 OR 4... Bb7
And the Catalan:
4... d5 5. Bg2
Why not play:
g3
and transpose into Catalan, instead of learning theory of both the…

Top players move order when playing QGD?
Why is typical move order for QGD among top grandmasters 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 d5? Why does not black immediatelly go 1. ..d5?
Also, why is QID via 3. ..b6 almost never played?

Why is 7...Ne4 8.Bd2 such a popular line in this variation of the Queen's Indian Defence?
This is the opening I'm referring to:
[fen ""]
1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 e6 3.g3 b6 4.Bg2 Bb7 5.O-O Be7 6.c4 O-O 7.Nc3 Ne4 8.Bd2!?
The other white book moves at this point seem sensible 8.Qc2 or 8.Qd3, or even 8.Nxe4 (which seems to almost always draw). I'm…

Now, the most popular choice for white in this position is g3 preparing to fianchetto its light squared Bishop. After this, if Black wants to develop…

Playing the Queen's Indian. Which kind of players?
In general, the Queen's Indian is not much seen at top levels when arising from the ECO move order:
[FEN ""]
1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 b6
However, many games transpose from the Nimzo-Indian defense:
[FEN ""]
1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3.…

What would be some great books that clarify the positional concepts of the Queen's Indian Defence from the Black side?
I've been looking for some books that explain how to play the Queen's Indian Defence. These books don't have to be recent or anything.
