The King's Indian Defense (or "KID") is a semi-closed opening starting with 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d6. Black develops with Bg7 and O-O and then either e5 or c5 depending on white's setup. The KID often leads to unbalanced positions: white attacks on the queenside and black attacks on the kingside, resulting in a high percentage of decisive games.

The King's Indian Defense (or the "KID") is a semi-closed opening characterized by the moves 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d6. It is part of the Hypermodern school. Its ECO code is E60-E99.

Black's usual plans are to develop with Bg7 and O-O and then break in the center with either e5 or c5 depending on white's setup.

As is common with modern openings, black does not directly occupy the center, but instead counter-attacks white's center. Additionally, the KID frequently leads to an unbalanced position where white attacks on the queenside and black attacks on the kingside. While white usually obtains an overwhelming space advantage, black's attack is almost always directed against white's king. If white can defend against the attack, the space advantage and queenside play is often decisive.

As a result of the unbalanced play, there is a relatively high percentage of decisive games (70% according to statistics based on 2M+ games) compared to other black replies to 1. d4.

I have an impression that at the high level, the Pirc defense is considered to be much more off-beat than the King's Indian defense; at least the latter has been a main weapon for many top players, starting from Bronstein and Geller and through…
