As is common with modern openings, black does not directly occupy the center, but instead counter-attacks white's center. Additionally, the KID frequently leads to an unbalanced position where white attacks on the queenside and black attacks on the kingside. While white usually obtains an overwhelming space advantage, black's attack is almost always directed against white's king. If white can defend against the attack, the space advantage and queenside play is often decisive.
As a result of the unbalanced play, there is a relatively high percentage of decisive games (70% according to statistics based on 2M+ games) compared to other black replies to 1. d4.
