I have Ubuntu Mate 22.04 installed on a 2013 imac 27". The brightness setting available thru the Mate Control Center does not modify the actual screen brightness. The screen remains almost unusably bright.

I'm a little nervous to just try to do those fixes since I don't know much about this stuff and they are really old, so I was hoping to get some direction here first before fiddling with those files.
Is there any way to turn the brightness down? I am OK even if it is not easily adjustable, as long as it is stuck at a lower level.
