I updated Ubuntu from 20.04 to 20.10.

The WiFi adapter was to reinstall, it's a D-Link DWA-192 AC 1900. I downloaded the driver from https://github.com/aircrack-ng/rtl8814au, using Windows 10 in dual boot on the same PC and the same adapter. I read the readme.md file and installed with make dkms_install. Then reboot and the WiFi icon shows up in the up right corner with a question mark, but in the Settings->WiFi it says "connected". But when I tried the browser there was no connection. contradictory icons

Any ideas?

  • Can you ping the gateway? `ping -c3 192.168.1.1` Any DNS server? `ping -c3 8.8.8.8` How about: `ping -c3 www.ubuntu.com` One of these will fail and we'll have a better idea about the way to proceed. Welcome to Ask Ununtu. – chili555 Dec 28 '20 at 23:44

  • ping -c3 www.ubuntu.com ping: www.ubuntu.com: Nome o servizio sconosciuto (Unknown name or service) – Sqr Dec 29 '20 at 11:16
  • May we also see: `dmesg | grep -e wlx -e etwork` As the result may be lengthy, paste the result here and give us the link: http://paste.ubuntu.com – chili555 Dec 29 '20 at 17:16
  • here you are: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/g5BkPBnFyF/ – Sqr Dec 29 '20 at 18:42
  • There is nothing very useful there. Let's see: `cat /var/log/syslog | grep etwork` – chili555 Dec 29 '20 at 23:15

  • something usefull here? https://askubuntu.com/questions/1029361/question-mark-icon-instead-of-wifi-icon – nobody Dec 30 '20 at 11:40
  • nope, there the only problem is the question mark icon, my problem is the connectin doesn't work but the WiFi Setting says "connected". Anyway I tried this one `sudo service network-manager restart` and obtain:`"Failed to restart network-manager.service: Unit network-manager.service not found.` – Sqr Dec 30 '20 at 13:50
  • I think the driver is ok because I can see the list of wif router around me. It's like Ubuntu is blocking the network, maybe the firewall? – Sqr Dec 30 '20 at 16:32
  • ok solved it was the firewall. I turn it on with the gui and internet is ok. – Sqr Dec 30 '20 at 17:49
